A LEGEND OF AMISSVILLE,VA

MISS ANNA WOODS

Miss Anna Woods was born in one of the three remaining slave quarters on the King Farm, located in Ben Venue just west of Amissville, VA. She was born around the time of the civil war during the 1860s and lived about 115 years. For many years she lived in the historic Amissville one room school house on Rt. 637 (South Poes Road) in Amissville, VA. She was well known throughout the neighborhood and was often seen walking on South Poes Road carrying buckets water from the neighbors well. She is know to have raised a pet pig in her house. Miss Woods also split her own firewood even in her late 90s. In the early 1970's she was in a featured article in the popular "Country" magazine with photographs of her splitting firewood and sitting on her firewood smoking her pipe. Her house later burned and was replaced in the 1990s by a small rambler style house. It is believed that her last years were spent in a nursing home, perhaps in Front Royal, VA.
